And Here We Are

September 20, 2022 by Perez 2 Comments

Greetings hip cats , and here we are.

On this day I wanted to share 3 poems – poems of wisdom and beauty.

Who know where the road will lead us – only a fool would say.

The road is long with many a winding turn.

Time goes by and in a blink of an eye –

Here I am in a new chapter.

Kindness

Naomi Shihab Nye – 1952 – Wikipedia

Before you know what kindness really is
you must lose things,
feel the future dissolve in a moment
like salt in a weakened broth.
What you held in your hand,
what you counted and carefully saved,
all this must go so you know
how desolate the landscape can be
between the regions of kindness.
How you ride and ride
thinking the bus will never stop,
the passengers eating maize and chicken
will stare out the window forever.

Before you learn the tender gravity of kindness
you must travel where the Indian in a white poncho
lies dead by the side of the road.
You must see how this could be you,
how he too was someone
who journeyed through the night with plans
and the simple breath that kept him alive.

Before you know kindness as the deepest thing inside,
you must know sorrow as the other deepest thing.
You must wake up with sorrow.
You must speak to it till your voice
catches the thread of all sorrows
and you see the size of the cloth.
Then it is only kindness that makes sense anymore,
only kindness that ties your shoes
and sends you out into the day to gaze at bread,
only kindness that raises its head
from the crowd of the world to say
It is I you have been looking for,
and then goes with you everywhere
like a shadow or a friend.

Wild Geese

Mary Oliver-1986

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees
for a hundred miles through the desert repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body
love what it loves.
Tell me about despair, yours, and I will tell you mine.
Meanwhile the world goes on.
Meanwhile the sun and the clear pebbles of the rain
are moving across the landscapes,
over the prairies and the deep trees,
the mountains and the rivers.
Meanwhile the wild geese, high in the clean blue air,
are heading home again.
Whoever you are, no matter how lonely,
the world offers itself to your imagination,
calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting –
over and over announcing your place
in the family of things.

Colors
Perez – 1987-
all of the colors
they live inside of me
all of the colors
they come set me free
red blue and indigo
that’s the way to go
all of the colors
the color of 20
Lord its wild free
the color of 30 – 40 that is me
the color of 50 wisdom and peace
the color of 60
the color of 60
wisdom they hold
they have the power to really let flow
music and colors a secret society
all of the colors, all of the colors, all of the colors
live inside the breeze

I will stay busy , active, focus , sing , cook, write , and share.

Here are some images of an opening I recently attended at Skarstedt gallery of Eric Fischls work – I love his work as well as his wife’s April Gorniks work as well.

– Stay well, enjoy things and support the arts, I will leave you with this amazing song that surrounds me and runs through my veins this day the 65 year around the sun and the lessons the beauty I have seen as I travel through time – One of my best friends, a jazz singer, Anita Wardell – Anita wrote some amazing lyrics to a Pat Metheny song.   Listen to it here on Soundcloud – xoxo Perez

Claudia Acuna has a new project dropping on September 23, 2022!!  DUO is  9 songs recorded with some of the finest musicians in the world. Entering the studio with the likes of Fred Hersch, Christian Mcbride and Kenny Barron for an intimate recording put her in a vulnerable spot, but the ease and comfort of the experience set the tone. The simplicity of just two, feeling the music and letting it flow through them, brought her to a new place as a Produce Claudia Acuña & Marc Uselli.

At Eastside Sound Studio – Bravo looking forward to hearing this project !

Kate Baker Juris

Kate has an amazing project – Return to Shore – a single will be released on Vic’s birthday Sept 26 and the album release is October 6th .

It was produced by Dave Stryker  on strike zone records

“Infused with many deep musical and life qualities, Kate and Vic seriously take care of business beyond the normal duo dialogue. This is a deep recording with love and mutual respect ringing clear as a bell. Kate’s emotional vocabulary is striking, nuanced and bold. We all miss Vic….however this recording leaves testimony to the love that permeates the music. Rest in peace Victor.”

Dave Liebman

Return to Shore, the impossibly tender duo offering from vocalist Kate Baker and recently passed guitar icon Vic Juris has the gravitas of a musical love story 25 years in the making . We’re privy to a intimate conversation between consummate artists as they write a final chapter together – an ode to each other and to the music they both love. Heartrending and transcendent.

Kate McGary

Henry Dietz is an amazing photographer –I met him years ago when I worked at the Crossroads of the World for Antony Fawcett.   Henry walked in with a bunch of images from a new band ( back then ) called America – His images were amazing and I have thought of Henry as the years passed by .

Henry recently had an opening at the Morrison Gallery in NYC It was a fantastic event but I must confess I may have had a wee but too much of the delicious Villa One Tequila created by Nick Jonas and John Varatos – Anejo was my favorite out of the 3 tequilas.

“Gilded Glamour” The Met Gala 2022

May 4, 2022 by Perez 1 Comment

Hi Hip CATS

I am back – it’s been a while the pandemic and all, but I thought it’s the perfect time to get back to blogging and let’s start with Fashions biggest night out – no not the Oscars – though I love them as well as any award show – it’s the MET GALA, so here goes!

“Gilded Glamour”

The Met Gala is fashion’s biggest night out and celebrities are known for saving their most striking outfits for its often-theatrical red carpet.

Stars across industries including TV, film, politics, and sport did not disappoint, bringing exaggerated silhouettes, elegant accessories, and moments of drama to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Monday evening.

Pandemic-related rescheduling meant it had been less than eight months since the (normally) annual fundraiser was last held, giving our genius designers less time to think about the event dress code “Gilded Glamour and White Tie.”

The theme continued 2021’s exploration of American style in keeping with the Costume Institute’s accompanying two-part exhibition, “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” and many attendees took direct inspiration from the Gilded Age, an era that saw America transformed at the end of the 19th century- Brilliant it’s about women in tight restraining corsets – yes a Bridgeton and Gilded Age infused fashion.

Because I have worked in Hollywood in the film business as well as worked in fashion Carolina Herrera, Dolce Gabbana, Loro Piana, Reem Accra and more I adore the Met Gala I think because I have respect for the clothing industry and hair and makeup professionals.

My Top Picks

A corset here a brilliant look there – when I think of these picks, I think about who read the invitation and understood the concept and nailed it!  Not in any order – let’s see brilliance – art and fashion at its best.

Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds

NEW YORK, NEW YORK – MAY 02: (L-R) 2022 Met Gala Co-Chairs Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds attend The 2022 Met Gala Celebrating “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 02, 2022 in New York City. (Photo by Theo Wargo/WireImage)

Gala Chairman and co-hosts Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds embraced the theme, with Lively in a glittering Versace beaded gown with an oversized coppery satin bow and matching gloves, Blake tribute to the empire state building – and there is a corset and amazing beading throughout the dress and had a glove change and Reynolds in a classic tuxedo

When Lively first arrived, the glittering, beaded Versace dress was wrapped by an oversized coppery satin bow. But as she ascended the stairs to the entrance of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, her bow was released to reveal the rest of the sweeping ensemble: A long skirt in an aged copper tone, paying tribute to the patina of the Statue of Liberty.  “This dress is an homage to New York City and so many of the classic, iconic buildings.”

Billie Eilish

Billie Eilish is a Gilded Age dream in Gucci corset- Goth Modern totally on point.Billie Eilish stunned in an upcycled Gucci dress with a corseted bodice and sheer sea-foam-hued gloved sleeves. Every part of the dress was made from “already existing materials” she said, nodding to its eco-friendly design.

Katy Perry

Katy Perry Wore A Lacy One-Shoulder Gown .A simple black and white one-shoulder mini gown accented with floral lace and Aquazzura heels. The way the lace was draped is flawless – the sheer gloves spot on and her hair and makeup perfection as to not to compete with the dress- the bottom of the dress is structured like an upside down tea cup –the transparent shoe – once again brill as to not to take away from the look ! A very modern interpretation of the Mets Theme – I adore this look.

Gigi Hadid

Gigi Hadid rocked an evening version of the classic winter parka when she strutted her stuff in Versace. a voluminous burgundy puffer coat with a high collar and a train and underneath wearing a corseted bustier and matching latex pants with high red boots, her hair in a spiky updo along with a bold red lip to match her monochromatic look. The coat oversized as if a tribute to the late Andre Leon Talley or the recent Dune film which was released in October 2021– The Look perfection!

Lenny Kravitz

Spot On! Lenny Kravitz in a leather and lace corset-inspired top. ‘That’s all!

Rosalia

6 a Rosalia-in-Givenchy-2-scaled
6 rosalia

High Fashion Moment here ! The House of Givenchy dressed Singer Rosalía in a Givenchy Haute Couture custom-made outfit designed by Matthew M. Williams! Ivory long dress in silk tulle embellished with G signature jewelry, fully embroidered with crystals, beads and silk ruffles layered with standing tulle, worn with matching embroidered gloves, ivory embroidered Kenny bag, ivory leather platform high boots, silver G earrings inserted with crystals and black matte signature G sunglasses.  This is old school Hollywood fashion glamor – just a breath of fresh air and a stunning fashion moment.

Lizzo

7a Lizzo

This look took 22,000 hours to create, the labor of love for fashion here! the black silk satin dress gown by Thom Browne took 1,200 “man hours” of the golden hand embroidery- Love that she played her flute on the red carpet – Professional Musician all the way !

I could go on for hours on this topic – that’s for a happy hour in the future.  Under Perez Lashes to be continued – my admiration goes out to all the designers – Hair and make-up and to the team of ladies in the back room – sewing and beading and creating these amazing looks and more.

And please plan your visit to the Met soon –

Perez’s Guide to Recent Loss Part 2: A Year in Review

August 1, 2019 by Perez 1 Comment

We said “I love you” to each other, and I remember Gregg saying to me “Diana your the best thing that has ever happened to me”, we hugged and I was off to work.

—

It’s been a year since I came home from work and found that my husband Gregg had gone to heaven. On the morning of August 13, 2018, we kissed and hugged, and we said I love you to each other and then I was off to work. You see, ever since 9/11, that was our thing. Because you never know…. How glad I am that we made that pact so many years ago.

If you read my guide on coping during the first six months, I thank you. I want you all to know that I followed my own advice. I stayed away from prescribed pills and limited my alcohol intake, and I surrounded myself with positive, creative people. As you may recall, I was downsized from my staff position with several of my colleagues just six weeks after Gregg’s passing. I have to say that, as the months passed, I went through several levels of intense moments. I was numb and in shock for a few months, then the numbness was replaced by sheer sadness and fear. Then my self-confidence went out the window, all while searching for new employment. Holy cow, talk about a challenge!

Partly out of necessity, and partly just to keep busy, I took any temp position that I was offered. Working at Moet Hennessy was a gas, and I loved temping for them. Working for designer Reem Accra was a great experience. She is a real star and fantastic person, however, I did not see myself in that role long term. Finally, after being without a staff position for nine months, I found my dream job at a private equity firm. The kind and lovely staff eased me into the daily responsibilities, and today I feel the role fits like a comfortable glove.

Working helped to keep my mind occupied during the weekdays, but at night and especially on the weekends, the sadness returned. Writing in my journal really helped, as did the comfort from good friends. Sending a huge shoutout to Iva Stegeman, Debra Duggan, Helen Sung, Jane Irving, Marcella Farman, Mary Glennon, Donna Agajanian, Kelley Suttenfield, Francesca Maese, Brian Offutt, Karl Spangenberg, Patricia Caroll, James Croak and his wife Tomoe, and to my next-door neighbors Jan and her husband in 2G. The support that came from you all was overwhelming and instrumental in my healing this past year.

At the one-year mark, I’ve come to realize that the old me is gone. She left this earth with my husband. In her place, there is emerging a new and changed person that begs to be discovered. I predict Year Two will be about finding her (me) and learning to give her what she needs.

With each day, I become more aware of the need to stop lamenting the loss of Gregg-and-Diana, and start rekindling the relationship with myself as a whole person, standing on her own. So how does one go about doing that, exactly? By focusing on what brings you joy.

It’s important to write this down, as different ideas can form on the page from those in your mind. Try it as an exercise. Be thoughtful, but don’t overthink it. Here is my list, as an example:

What Brings Me Joy?
1. Going to see live music and other music concerts
2. Making music. I am just now starting to feel comfortable enough to start to easing my way back into performing. I am working on a new musical project and I have a trip to Nashville on the horizon!
3. Attending art shows and visiting museums
4. Photography
5. Working out at Equinox
6. Hosting dinner parties
7. Swimming and being in the water beach or pool
8. Watching tennis and the Olympics live or on TV
9. Being in nature

Travel. On my shortlist is:
a. Iceland to see the Northern Lights
b. Food and Wine Festivals
c. Umbria Jazz Festival

As you build your toolkit of things-that-bring-you-joy, eventually memories of your time with your loved one will start to fade. I knew this would happen with the natural passage of time, so I created a book based on my journal entries about Gregg along with images that I will have printed, to remind me of the great life that we shared.

Be thankful for the past, but focus on the present and the future. Keep moving forward in life.  Time is a gift.  Take one day at a time and breathe.

Working at Moet Hennessey- the entrance to the office !

Working at Moet Hennessey

Working for Reem Accra – yes that’s me top left – all in black hahha

My wardrobe while I templed for Reem – its Black when you work in fashion

Attending Art Openings

Enjoying Great Food

Keeping on Moving Forward

Perez sending much love to all. Peace, Perez

Coping With the Loss of a Spouse: Perez’s Guide for the Recently Widowed

February 5, 2019 by Perez 6 Comments

Perez puts the spotlight on her experience of recent widowhood, by offering personal recommendations to combat the trauma of loss.

The funeral is over. Your family and friends have gone, returning to their day-to-day routines. Things seem like they are regaining a sense of normalcy. Then, without warning, you’re laid off from your job, effectively going from a two-income household, to a zero-income household in just a few short weeks. This unthinkable scenario is exactly what happened to me. It’s now been six months since my husband passed away, and five months since I was laid off of my job.

Amidst the pain of losing a spouse, it’s imperative to find a way to carry on even though your world has turned upside down. Below are some practical suggestions to get you through the initial trauma of loss, while at the same time putting yourself in the best position to take care of YOU. As I lost my husband and 6 weeks later I lost my position- went from a 2 income family to a one income family to no income at all in 6 weeks – the amount of loss was terrifying for me and still is 6 months into this journey – I did wake up countless nights in fear and panic , crying out loud – and these steps helped me through and remembering to take it one day at a time.

1. Review loans, bills and financial obligations
The first task is to confer with your trusted advisors and focus on the most immediate financial tasks. Avoid making any major life-altering decisions when you are in a state of emotional flux. It may be tempting to shake up your life in the wake of such a major loss by selling your house or condo and moving across the country to live near friends or family, but this is not the time to act impulsively. This is the time to take care of yourself – more than ever. Note: If you are without employment, fast forward to number 13. That gets moved up in the order of priorities for you.

2. Cry often and hard
Try not to hold on to the grief. Instead, concentrate on letting go and staying in the present. Take deep breaths in and exhale the pain. Stay well hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid overdoing it with alcohol. It may feel like it’s helping in the moment, but it can actually worsen feelings of depression.

3. Find a local support group
Find a group, or find multiple groups, to help you express and process your grief. Although you may feel alone in all this, there are many others having the exact same experiences who will share invaluable resources with you.

4. Medications and supplements
Your physician may recommend anti-anxiety medications or supplements if anxiety is an issue for you. I have to say this is a completely personal choice. I felt more comfortable taking organic supplements than pharmaceutical drugs. The one that worked best for me was Rescue Remedy.

It took the edge off my anxiety and allowed me to sleep. My dear friend and neighbor introduced me to it, and it really helped.

Also try the Calm app: www.calm.com

5. Buy a weighted blanket
Studies show that these specially engineered blankets promote relaxation for a more calming sleep. Some say the weights hit the body’s pressure points in a way that replicate the feelings of being hugged. I bought one and used it for months, and highly recommend it. It’s difficult to explain, but it made me feel close to my husband, as if he was on top of me hugging me.

6. Go outside every day
Take a walk, either alone or with a neighbor. Living alone can feel isolating and its very new to you as a recent widow. It’s important to leave the sanctuary of your home and interact with the outside world – especially on those days when you do not feel up to it. Make it a mission to go to the grocery store, even it’s just to pick up one item. Talk to one person, even if it’s just to say hello to the postal worker. This is so important for your mental wellbeing. I went from having someone at home my husband that I loved very much to not having him at home then to having no coworkers to interact with – this was a devastating feeling of isolation – so take a walk daily – get out into the fresh air- it will help you.

7. Find free or low-budget activities
The word “free” is going to be your new best friend for the near future. If like me, you are suddenly without any recreational budget, there are many things you can do that don’t cost much money, especially if you live near a city or university. I’ve had to cut back on seeing performances, and I look for the concerts that are free or “no cover” instead. Also, I find art openings are a great way to spend the evening and get “out of your head” for a while. Book Stores always have events – those are also a great way of getting out and always interesting. I am also known for throwing small dinner parties at my home. I’ve learned that, if I cook a “main,” (as opposed to cooking the entire meal) people don’t mind bringing a side dish or dessert, and there will still be plenty to go around, and even a fair amount of leftovers for the week. If that sounds like you, go for it.

8. Cooking at home
Speaking of dinner, it can seem surprisingly overwhelming to cook for a “party of one.” I decided to keep it simple, and rely on a few one-pot recipes that I can go to in a pinch (see below). It’s wintertime now, so you may want to change it up for the warmer months. Take a look and see if any of these ideas from Allrecipies.com sound appealing. Or reach out to me – I have loads of recipes, I love to cook.

Boilermaker Tailgate Chili

Simmering Thai Hot Pot

Curried Coconut Chicken

Beef Stew IV

They all keep well too and can be eaten over several days, if needed. Just reheat, and add some different sides, or fresh veggies and herbs like tomato and watercress to jazz it up.

9. Exercise
Like food, regular exercise is another way of nourishing the body. When I lost my job, I also lost my treasured membership at Equinox Sports Club. I understand the huge impact of exercise on mental outlook, so I started to work out at home. I would also play fun music and dance around the house for 30 minutes to get my heart rate up – free cardio! I am a jazz singer so I danced and sang out loud – this is a fantastic feeling. In December, I received the best gift — a two-month pass to Equinox! This gift really raised my spirits. I still don’t know the identity of my Secret Santa, but I want to use this opportunity to say a special thank you to whoever you are!

10. Surround yourself with loving people
During this time, you may have to engage with friends, acquaintances, or family members that are well meaning, yet do not offer the kind of support needed. This is a time to keep your loved and trusted ones around you, and steer clear of any negativity or toxic thinking. You want to be with people who are good for your mental wellbeing.

11. Journal your thoughts
Buy a journal that is aesthetically appealing to you, place it by your bed, and write down thoughts as they come to you before or after sleeping. I often write to my husband Gregg at night, or I write about the challenges since his passing. Writing down my thoughts helps me prioritize and find solutions. Remember: For every problem, there is a solution.

12. Try sleeping in the middle of the bed
In my opinion, it’s not healthy to sleep on the same side of the bed, imagining what if your spouse could return. It’s best to change this pattern, and sleep in the center of the bed. You may also want to re-arrange the furniture in the bedroom, and make small changes to the accessories, to reinforce the change.

13. Loss of income
If what happened to me happened to you, and you find yourself with zero income after the death of your spouse, the first thing to do is to not panic. The second thing to do is to make an appointment with a financial advisor to see where things stand monetarily. Tell anyone and everyone that you are looking for work, as you never know who might be a potential resource. Then update your resumé and start applying to agencies and companies you think would be a good fit. Make a goal of applying to 5-10 jobs a day, and ramp up your search on Sundays, as that’s when many new postings are listed. Also, if you are not finding your dream job right away, be open to the idea of temp work. I had a wonderful experience temping for Moët Hennessey over the holiday season, which was instrumental in helping to cope with feelings of loss. Please keep your faith and confidence as the months go by – your dream job is just around the corner.

14. Plan a trip
Start planning for a trip to be taken one year after your spouse has passed away. Pick a favorite place, or a place s/he always wanted to visit. Take the love and your memories of your spouse with you in your heart. Some people choose to memorialize their spouses with ceremonies or rituals like spreading ashes in a scenic spot or sending flowers across a lake. Breathe deeply, and exhale, remembering all of the good times you had with your spouse. They will always be with you.

15. Be kind to yourself
Seek out the positive in all aspects of life, even when you don’t necessarily feel it. Watch only lighthearted films. Avoid sad films altogether. Read inspiring works like those of the poet Mary Oliver.

The loss of a spouse is one of the most stressful events in life. At such a difficult time, it’s important to take care of yourself and take charge of your life. It’s been six months now since my husband passed. And gradually, at my own pace, I’m moving through the grieving process and making space for the healing process to begin.

Whether you’re 56, 61 or 70 years old, you need to think about the rest of your life and managing your finances to support yourself and the life you want to live.
Again, be kind to yourself.

Peace Perez

PEREZ COVERS APAP 2019

January 17, 2019 by Perez Leave a Comment

APAP 2019 was once again fantastic!
Perez puts the spotlight on APAP – its NYC greatest hang !

Who is APAP? They have been serving thousands of member
organizations and individuals since 1957, APAP works to
strengthen the field and advance careers through professional
development, grant support, advocacy, networking and the annual
APAP|NYC conference .

Every year, APAP|NYC welcomes 3,600 colleagues and peers from 49 U.S. states and more than 29 countries for 5+ days of
professional development, showcases, unmatched networking and the world’s largest performing arts marketplace.
And networking is what its all about!

I checked out the Found Movement Group, a diverse ensemble of movers integrated to form a creative whole. they are the overlooked because of shape, size, race, gender, education (or lack there of), having too much of one style but wanting to train in another, not having enough training, the list goes on.

Found was established to fill the absence of hard hitting dance in Nashville. The company’s mission is to establish an open community by addressing real life issues through the lens of dance and movement theatre. The company explores the unspoken trials which we all seem to face but no one wants to admit. Our vision is to expose Nashville to choreography that maintains responsibility to social consciousness.

PEREZ

Singer, composer, recording artist Perez, pianist Misha Tsiganov, and guitarist Paul Bollenbeck join forces as a fresh new trio. The Harlem-born vocalist Perez can swing a standard, share a story through song, or nail a protest anthem. Her delivery is intimate enough to touch individual hearts and minds, and powerful enough to fill a concert hall. Stanley Crouch describes her as the real thing and indeed she is pure-voiced and free of affectations, with a round, robust sound as sparkling and fresh as iced Perrier yet dense and rich as darkest espresso.

– Christopher Loudon- JAZZ TIMES

Perez’s voice is a humidly sensual work of art: a perfectly formed alto with a solid bottom, a broad midrange of consistent density, and a confident top. This voice permits Perez to sing whatever she damn well pleases…and to sing it well.
– All About Jazz

Mafalda Minnozzi

I love this lady – her Duo with Paul Ricci is perfection – Romantic and artful – and dear friend of mine – so watch out for them – all over the world.

Ron Jackson

Cought his set at Gail Boyd’s showcase – Master 7-string guitarist Ron Jackson’s Trio performs jazz standards and new renditions of modern songs by composers such as Bill Withers, Drake, Van Morrison, Freddie Jackson, and Brian McKnight. Ron transforms pop hits into jazz, bossa nova, samba, and swing styles. Ron’s new album “Standard and Other Songs” is scheduled for release March 2019.   brownbassmusic.com
Classified as: REAL HIP CAT!

Lucia Jackson

Jazz vocalist and dancer Lucia Jackson performed her music from her debut album featuring songs from the great American songbook, pop tunes, and her original compositions. Lucia grew up in Spain and draws upon these musical roots by incorporating Flamenco and tango into jazz. Her presentation will be a combination of her music with dance and choreography. Lucia is a trained Alvin Ailey School modern dancer and will use her skills to present a program rarely seen in jazz.

Svetlana

I caught this treasure at Pat Harris’s “Two Great Days of Jazz” showcase -and it was stunning!

Svetlana is a critically acclaimed “outstanding” (Wall Street Journal) vocalist from New York and a leader of the New York based swing band, The Delancey Five (“NYC Darlings” Time Out).  Svetlana’s shows transport the audiences to the carnival of sound, seamlessly moving from sophisticated and sultry retrospection to a rowdy joyous dance party.
This is a clip from her previous record,  Night at the Speakeasy, ft Wycliffe Gordon

just sayin!
Here is her website: http://svetlanajazz.com/

So until next year – support live music and here are some fun images of APAP2019

She is a global touring and recording artist whose genre-crossing work strives to “prompt the Native into action and engage our psyche.” Her music has been honored with five Nā Hōkū Hanohano music awards and presented in eight international tours. “My work draws directly from ancestral memory and hula practice, with roots in chant that transforms to melody. She was one of the speakers at the Opening Plenary: Trans.ACT: What is the Role and Responsibility of the Performing Arts in our World Today? Just saying dynamic and smart!

This year I did my debut at APAP – I was a part of Gail Boyd’s showcase

I presented the Truth Concert Moments in storytelling -Songs of love -truth and conflict.  Please enjoy and please book this show.

Eva’s Tune – an original composition that highlights the beauty and hope – a vision of goodness that is within us all
Crazy He Calls Me –this composition selected for 2 reasons- one because I was exposed to mental illness as a child ,as my mother was in and out of mental intuitions all her life- and i was always challenged by the thought that, I too, might be crazy -the second reason is because we need to be a bit crazy to love and trust -we do need to cling to love and passion now and always
Cherokee – Ray Nobles composition – Perez chose this because Trump is breaking the federal government’s promises to Native Americans
People Make the World Go Round– go underground young man – this line spoke to Perez as to all the lyrics presented in the entire Truth Concert House in New Orleans Nina Simone influence on the Truth Concert I Put a Spell on You – Nina Simone influence on the Truth Concert
I Ain’t Got No – Nina Simone influence on the Truth Concert and with the current political and environmental situation this is a chore composition for the Truth Concert Colors original spiritual by Perez about colors of wisdom and souls and Shine – if we can

With more than 1,000 performances happening in and around the conference, artist showcases are one of the top reasons professionals from around the world come to APAP|NYC and I was thrilled to be a part of this.

APAP is a great hang and you run into old friends and you make new friends – For me it’s a must do every year

This year APAP closed out with hip cat Bassem Youssef Physician. Comedian and arts activist

Known as “the Jon Stewart of Egypt”, Youssef was named one of Time Magazine’s “100 most influential people in the world” and Foreign Policy magazine’s “100 Leading Global Thinkers” in 2013, and won the Committee to Protect Journalists’ International Press Freedom Award. A heart surgeon turned political satirist, Youseff was watched by millions on his Egyptian television show, until a warrant for his arrest was issued by a government without a sense of humor. He is the author of the book Revolution for Dummies: Laughing – He is very smart and very funny.

Shout out to all who performed at APAP 2018 Congratulations.

Spotlight on the top 10 CDs of 2017, by PEREZ

December 4, 2017 by Perez Leave a Comment

edited by Kelley Suttenfield

My word it will be a new year already – what an amazing year – as I work away at my day gig – I get to listen to amazing music for  hours – it’s really difficult to narrow this down to ten top cds but here it is:

my top 10 picks of 2017 !

1

Impossible – Aubrey Logan DEBUT ALBUM

Busy times are coming up for the live-wire trombonist Aubrey Logan, a super talented artist. Seattle-born, LA-based Logan was the winner of the Jazz Voice Competition at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2009, and since then has performed or recorded with Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, Josh Groban, Linda Ronstadt, Smokey Robinson and Pharrell Williams. Recent videos such as Bills have had over 200,000 views.

Logan’s album Impossible was released at the beginning of 2017. “We titled the album Impossible because so many people were saying it couldn’t be done, that we couldn’t pull together an album with such a diversity of styles and genres.“ “Striking a vibe not unlike the superspy soundtracks of the ‘60s (think “Bond, James Bond”), Pistol targets Logan’s “sassy-chick” side, according to the artist herself, who co-wrote the song with Pam Sheyne, Pistol one of my favorite songs just won the USA writing contest in the Jazz category and 3rd overall, this week- I have seen her incredible performances live and I absolutely love her. “ – I dig it!.  Click here for link to Impossible.

2

Loneliness Road – Jamie Saft, Steve Swallow, and Bobby Previte with Iggy Pop, RareNoise)

For many years, Kerhonkson, N.Y., has been known mostly for its affordable getaway resorts and endless acres of state property prime for deer hunting. These days, however, the sprawling Ulster County mountain town has become a destination residence for some of the most creative minds in modern music. Veteran jazz pianist Jamie Saft’s, who has three decades in active duty in the music scene, most rewarding work exists in the trio he’s established with legendary ECM bassist Steve Swallow and multifaceted percussion guru Bobby Previte. Loneliness Road is the second album by this group, and the singularity by which these men converse on their respective instruments with one another illuminates a new shade of color to the art of the trio that falls somewhere between the elegance of Bill Evans and the ecstatic urgency of Alice Coltrane

Everyday (2017)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TY0huZRQbuU

But it’s the unlikely presence of Iggy Pop, who channels his well-deep baritone through his love for Frank Sinatra’s In The Wee Small Hours on three tracks (Don’t Lose Yourself, Everyday, and the album’s title cut) in a way that will make any fan of the punk godfather’s work swoon, while the man born Jim Osterberg rings in age 70 with a perfectly imperfect croon. Just sayin’…as I was a punk / new wave in the 70’s I must say this has a great vibe and it makes my top 10 of 2017 – Click here for purchase link to Loneliness Road.

3

Not Even Happiness – Julie Byrne

Not Even Happiness by American singer Julie Byrne is one of my top 10 picks, for her fresh and real truth in her songwriting, as evidenced in the track Follow My Voice. This latest album was recorded and mixed in Byrne’s hometown of Buffalo, New York, except for the string arrangements by Jake Falby, which were recorded at a cabin in Holderness, New Hampshire. The album is labeled as a contemporary folk release. According to Ed Nash of The Line of Best Fit, Not Even Happiness features motifs of “nature and matters of the heart.”Julie Byrne is an American singer, songwriter and guitarist from Buffalo, New York. To date, she has released two studio albums, Rooms With Walls and Windows (2014) and Not Even Happiness(2017).  One of my top 10-fresh real truth in her songwriting – Click here for link to Not Even Happiness.

4

Dreams And Daggers –Cecile McLorin Salvant

“The songs this album are of dreams and daggers. The daggers have been used at times to attack, at times to defend. For power, no doubt, to take it, to keep it. The dreams are the ones I caught looking out a window, or from the light sleep before the deep. I don’t always know what they mean, but they are the ones I was able to keep. And yet dreams can be desires too.  I wrote them down to make them true. That we may bring our wildness into view.  That we may be unruled and unruly” says Cécile McLorin Salvant.  I love this singer and think this is a fantastic CD. Check out her version of You’re My Thrill and you’ll see why. Click here for link to Dreams and Daggers.

5

Dreams Sinne  Eeg

Sinne Eeg is a singer’s singer. With her perfect intonation, impeccable sense of time, and mellifluous timbre, the Danish vocalist has earned the admiration of fans and fellow musicians around the world. An international star in Europe and Asia, Eeg is poised to break out in the U.S. with her newest CD, Dreams, her ninth CD as a leader. Her last CD, the critically acclaimed and award-winning Eeg-Fonnesbæk, a duo project featuring only vocals and bass, was her first album distributed in the U.S. On DREAMS, she’s once again joined by her longtime collaborator Jacob Christoffersen, with the rest of the ensemble comprising some of the most respected names on the U.S. jazz scene today. According to Eeg, “It’s important to perform with great musicians, but it’s also important to perform with people you genuinely like. I find it essential to have a good rapport with the band, as I do with the guys on this CD.’’ I love, LOVE Sinne’s singing, both live and on record! Check her out – click here for link to Dreams.

6

Dream Ago – Gabrielle Stravelli

Gabrielle Stravelli’s latest album Dream Ago was released on January 27th, 2017.  Her new compositions are professionally constructed and manage to take us to surprising places in the future and past. I adore the tune Cake of My Childhood-It is charming to hear excellent musical taste – and the title track Dream Ago is a real showcase of her song writing talent. Catch her live when she’s on tour in your neck of the woods.  Click here for link to Dream Ago.

7

Central Line – Art Hirahara

Pianist Art Hirahara makes bold and personal statements while taking us along for the ride on a journey of self-exploration. Central Line is the sincere demonstration of a forward-minded artist seeking to discover the inner continuity of his life, and to pay respect and homage to the music of his family, ancestors and homeland. With an amazing combination of talents and hard swinging highlights by bassist Linda Oh, drummer Rudy Royston and special guest Donny McCaslin on a few selections, and an evocative program of music, Hirahara’s Central Line is elegantly lyrical and clearly suggestive of a modern jazz sensibility that is sure to bring bright moments of intense delight to jazz fans everywhere. I and proud to call him a friend and have much musical respect for this hip cat. Click here for link to Central Line.

8

Harmony of Difference – Kamasi Washington

Even on this shorter EP, saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington displays a tireless ambition with his compositions, performance, and spiritual approach.

Even on this shorter EP, saxophonist and composer Kamasi Washington displays a tireless ambition with his compositions, performance, and spiritual approach. Harmony of Difference was originally part of a multimedia work that illustrated how forces that seem to be working in opposition could come together as a composite of complex beauty. Where musical counterpoint was the driving idea for the compositions, Harmony also feels like a meditation on memory, association, and vantage point. But what ultimately binds Washington’s work together is his spiritual approach. The concept for Harmony and the video for Truth make clear that Washington is framing his work so that they’re in conversation with the biggest social issues facing the world. Harmony of Difference, a brief and concentrated blast of emotion, is a great place to catch up on what Washington has to say. Hip CAT alert here!

9

Music From Our Soul – Charnett Moffett

If you were hip to the vastly underrated era of jazz during the late ’80s and early ’90s, you are well aware of the period’s hottest young prospect on the bass in Charnett Moffett, who in the infancy of his career found him blessed with tenures at the side of such giants as Ornette Coleman, Art Blakey, McCoy Tyner and Sonny Sharrock. Now, on the 30th anniversary of his classic Blue Note debut Net Man, the New York City-born musician brings together an all-star squad of fellow Reagan/Bush-era vets for his wildly diverse debut on the Motema Music label. But while the combo of guitarist Stanley Jordan, pianist Cyrus Chestnut and drummers Jeff “Tain” Watts and Victor Lewis is impressive in and of itself, it’s the increasingly rare studio presence of sax legend Pharoah Sanders that makes Music From Our Soul such a wonder to behold; the former Coltrane Quintet co-captain leads these renowned modern jazz journeymen into the promised land like a hard-bop Gandalf.  Click here for link to Charnett Moffett.

10

The Sky Remains – Josh Nelson

In this latest project, The Sky Remains, Josh Nelson uses an 11-piece ensemble to create an aural equivalent to his native city (Los Angeles), combining three horns (trumpet, clarinet and alto sax or flute) with an expanded rhythm section (piano, organ, bass, drums and percussion) and three vocalists—including Nelson—singing with and without lyrics. Nelson also pays tribute to two LA musicians, Russell Garcia (with his bizarre “Lost Souls of Saturn”, here transformed into a potent solo vehicle for the horns) and Elliott Smith (whose “Pitseleh” is offered as a tender memorial to the late singer-songwriter). When Nelson performs this suite live, he enhances the experience with historical film footage. However, those unable to catch one of these multimedia events should not be deterred from purchasing this CD, as Nelson’s music creates vivid images on its own.

Hip CAT Alert – Chick Alert Puts the spot light on Von Smith

October 8, 2017 by Perez Leave a Comment

HAPPY AUTUMN- I just caught this set at Manderly BAR in NYC – he is a super old school new school hip cat!

A Kansas City, Missouri native, Von Smith was most recently seen on E!’s “Opening Act”, where his experience was documented as Lady Gaga chose him to be her opening act on her tour in Australia.  First introduced to the world when his version of “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not going)” from Dreamgirls became a sensation on YouTube, Von Smith has garnered a legion of fans and performed on some of the most celebrated stages, including ABC’s “The View”, Bravo’s “The Kathy Griffin Show”, BET’s “106th and Park”, featured on MTV News, VH1’s “Best Week Ever”, E’s “The Soup”, TV Azteca’s “La Academia” (Mexico), “Up Junior” (China), and American Idol season 8 as one of the top 17 finalists.

When not rocking out on national stages across the country, or performing in front of symphonies – Von can be found writing songs in the recording studio, look here for his original EP, “On To Something”, available on Itunes HERE.

I have sung in intimate rooms and seen many vocalists over the years in intimate hip rooms, and it’s an amazing experience.  I am so happy that I caught this talent live, so if he comes to your neck of the woods – go see him – support live music and musicians –

HIP CHICK ALERT puts the spotlight on the one and only Aubrey Logan Queen of Sass, Jazz, and Heartbrake!

September 11, 2017 by Perez Leave a Comment

I saw this super star this past Saturday at Rockwood Hall in NYC- I have been following her for some time but seeing her hearing her live is amazing!  Aubrey Logan takes a song you’ve heard a thousand times and spins it on its heels. It’s new. It’s fresh. It delights. AND – she writes. Oh, does she write! — songs with lyrics that paint the chambers of the heart with all the colors on the human palette. I am a true fan of her original material. And guess what her new album is out – it’s called Impossible – and I strongly suggest you all go buy this one- just click here !

Whether she’s jammin’ on her trombone or sailing through a song with her nothing-held-back, multi-octave vocal instrument, Aubrey captivates audiences and delivers originality to everything modern in music. Her style as an entertainer ranges from sassy to sultry, and her performances never fail to elicit the highest critical praise.

PISTOL written by Aubrey Logan:

A graduate of Boston’s renown Berklee College of Music and winner of the top vocal competitions at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, Aubrey is passionate about her art and finds herself at home whether in a recording studio, on stage with symphony orchestras, in intimate clubs with her own ensemble or in a classroom teaching kids. This Seattle native who makes her home in Los Angeles has attracted enthusiastic fans all across the country, and now, throughout much of the world.

Our lady also is a featured artist on tour with Scott Bradlee’s acclaimed Postmodern Jukebox- like BAM!

Give It Away – ’60s ‘Austin Powers’ – Style RHCP Cover ft. Aubrey Logan

Here – Peggy Lee – Style Postmodern Jukebox Alessia Cara Cover ft. Aubrey Logan

Beauty and The Beast – Vintage Jazz Disney Cover ft. Aubrey Logan – Postmodern Jukebox

The international Aubrey recently wrapped a tour (11 cities in the U.K. plus Dubai, U.A.E.) as a featured artist on tour with Scott Bradlee’s acclaimed Postmodern Jukebox, and she will soon rejoin the tour with appearances in 29 European cities from Manchester to Nuremburg. This fall, Aubrey swings stateside in seven major U.S. cities, and she will be headlining jazz festivals in Boston and Bakersfield.Working at home in what she calls her “solitary confinement chamber” (the room with the keyboard, the metronome and a whole lot of manuscript paper)

“Don’t Wanna Tell Nobody” written by Aubrey Logan:

Aubrey’s new album“IMPOSSIBLE” is out and it’s amazing! I have it and I cant stop listening to it- She has her fans to thank for this project; many even spurred her on through the online platform, PledgeMusic. And with her cheering section in mind, Aubrey has tailored the tracks with lots of pop influences and elements of jazz she has loved all her life.

Impossible written by Aubrey Logan:

So be ready for some favorite covers and a whole lot of original stuff. That’s what Aubrey Logan does, and then some.  I am forever a fan and please see her website and run go check her tour dates, see her live and buy her album!

PS – Aubrey grabbed this guy on stage, Christopher Bill – they  played Crying on the Airplane and it was super !

enjoy!

Peace Perez

Okay, hip cats out there. It's December 1st. And y Okay, hip cats out there. It's December 1st. And yes, even though I love my punk, my funk, my jazz, my folk music. I always spend Christmas with Kelly Clarkson. Heres is to all us single women out there with that special someone in mind As for me, this song reminds me of my late husband and wishing he and I were spending another Christmas together. Gregg was my lover. He was my confidant. He was my best friend. It's hard to find that in another person. we used to joke around- ''It's just us two''. To all you widows out there, surround yourself with your good friends during this holiday season. You need them most of all now. And keep your happy memories with your late husband close to your heart.. @kellyclarkson 🌟 GLOW

I'm not telling you to make the world better, beca I'm not telling you to make the world better, because I don't think that progress is necessarily part of the package. I'm just telling you to live in it. Not just to endure it, not just to suffer it, not just to pass through it, but to live in it. To look at it. To try to get the picture. To live recklessly. To take chances. To make your own work and take pride in it. To seize the moment. And if you ask me why you should bother to do that, I could tell you that the grave's a fine and private place, but none I think do there embrace. Nor do they sing there, or write, or argue, or see the tidal bore on the Amazon, or touch their children. And that's what there is to do and get it while you can and good luck at it.
